**Ahmedabad, February 18, 2025** – Justice Biren A. Vaishnav has been appointed as the acting Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court, effective February 18th to March 2nd. This follows Chief Justice Sunita Agarwal’s leave of absence. The appointment was announced by the Ministry of Law and Justice, exercising powers conferred by Article 223 of the Indian Constitution.
The announcement comes after the Gujarat High Court Advocates’ Association (GHCAA) passed a resolution on February 17th requesting Chief Justice Agarwal’s transfer. The resolution cited concerns regarding a change in the court’s case allocation roster. The roster dictates how cases are assigned to different judges within the High Court.
