Tue Feb 18 02:00:00 UTC 2025: ## Pakistan Ready to Host Champions Trophy Amidst India’s Absence
**Lahore, Pakistan –** The Champions Trophy 2025 kicked off its festivities with a dazzling curtain-raiser event in Lahore on Sunday, marking Pakistan’s return to hosting ICC events after a 29-year hiatus. The tournament, which begins February 19th with a clash between Pakistan and New Zealand, will see 15 matches played across Pakistan and the UAE. India’s refusal to travel to Pakistan due to security concerns resulted in their matches being relocated to the neutral venue.
The absence of India was noticeable at the Lahore event, with Indian flags notably absent from the Gaddafi Stadium decorations. Similarly, the Indian flag was removed from the Karachi stadium. Despite this, the PCB Chairman, Mohsin Naqvi, highlighted the tournament’s importance as a showcase of Pakistan’s hospitality and passion for cricket. He emphasized the significance of hosting the event, particularly considering the rich history of cricket in the nation. Naqvi urged fans to fill the stadiums throughout the tournament.
Pakistan, the defending champions, are grouped with New Zealand, India, and Bangladesh. The top two teams from each group will advance to the semi-finals. The tournament will be played in Karachi, Lahore, and Rawalpindi in Pakistan, alongside matches in Dubai. The event’s opening ceremony at the historic Lahore Fort further underscored the anticipation surrounding the tournament. Members of Pakistan’s victorious 2017 Champions Trophy squad were present at the ceremony.
