NEW DELHI — The Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani, arrived in India Monday for a two-day state visit, receiving a warm welcome from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who personally greeted him at the airport. The visit aims to further strengthen the already robust multifaceted partnership between the two nations.
The Emir’s itinerary includes a ceremonial welcome at Rashtrapati Bhawan Tuesday morning, followed by high-level talks with Prime Minister Modi at Hyderabad House. Discussions are expected to cover a wide range of bilateral issues, including trade, investment, energy, technology, and cultural exchange. An exchange of Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) is also scheduled for Tuesday afternoon. Later in the day, the Emir will meet with President Droupadi Murmu.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar is also slated to meet with the Emir on Monday evening. The Qatari delegation includes ministers, senior officials, and business leaders.
Prime Minister Modi, in a social media post, referred to the Emir as “my brother” and expressed his anticipation for their meeting. The Ministry of External Affairs highlighted the deep-rooted historical ties between India and Qatar, emphasizing the significant contribution of the large Indian diaspora in Qatar’s progress. This is the Emir’s second state visit to India, his first being in March 2015.
