Mon Feb 17 19:20:00 UTC 2025: ## Gophers Women’s Basketball Falls to No. 9 Ohio State in Overtime Thriller

**Minneapolis, MN** – The Minnesota Gophers women’s basketball team suffered a heartbreaking 87-84 overtime loss to No. 9 Ohio State on Thursday night, jeopardizing their NCAA tournament hopes and a potential Big Ten tournament bye. Despite a closely contested game and stellar performances from several players, the Gophers ultimately fell short against a resurgent Buckeyes team.

The game saw nearly identical statistical performances from both teams in recent games, but Ohio State’s ability to force a season-high 21 turnovers proved decisive. Minnesota, typically a team with very few turnovers, struggled with ball control, particularly in the first quarter where the Buckeyes shot 71%.

Ohio State’s Cotie McMahon dominated inside, leading all scorers with 25 points (on 62.5% shooting) and adding six assists and four rebounds. Ava Watson also contributed significantly for the Buckeyes with a strong 3-point shooting performance.

Despite the loss, Minnesota received strong performances from several players. Sophie Hart achieved a season-high 21 points, and Amaya Battle added 17 points and two steals. Annika Stewart also contributed 12 points. A late 3-pointer by Grace Grocholski tied the game and forced overtime, showcasing the team’s resilience.

Gophers head coach Dawn Plitzuweit acknowledged Ohio State’s superior athleticism and intensity, but highlighted her team’s versatility in the post as a strength. The loss, however, leaves the Gophers (currently ranked No. 11 in the Big Ten) with a challenging road ahead to secure a Big Ten tournament berth and improve their NCAA tournament prospects. Their upcoming schedule includes crucial games against Oregon, Purdue, Washington, and a pivotal matchup against No. 22 Michigan State on March 1st. A win in that game could significantly boost their NCAA tournament chances.
