Mon Feb 17 18:23:09 UTC 2025: ## Guillain-Barré Syndrome Outbreak Raises Concerns in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana
**Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh – February 18, 2025** – A sudden surge in Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) cases in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana has sparked public health concerns. At least three deaths have been reported, prompting authorities to take preventative measures.
GBS, a rare neurological disorder, affects approximately one to two people per 100,000. However, recent reports indicate a significant increase in cases, with seven cases reported in Guntur government hospital on February 11th alone. Currently, 17 patients are undergoing treatment in Andhra Pradesh government hospitals. One death occurred in Guntur, and another in Visakhapatnam. Telangana has also reported one fatality.
While health officials emphasize that GBS is not contagious and is often triggered by prior infections, the rise in cases, including among children, is alarming. The Andhra Pradesh government has launched a review of the situation and is taking steps to ensure sufficient medical supplies and treatment are available. Minister Satyakuamr stated that 85% of patients recover without treatment, and the government has ample vaccines and treatments available. The government is also conducting medical camps in affected areas.
Health Secretary Krishnababu clarified that GBS is not genetic nor related to COVID-19, and its exact cause remains undetermined. He added that even with infection, only 5-7% of those diagnosed with GBS succumb to the illness.
Symptoms of GBS include weakness starting in the legs and spreading upwards, numbness and tingling in the extremities, and difficulty breathing in severe cases. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial for recovery, with a 4-week recovery time possible in early stages, extending to six months in severe cases.
The public is advised to maintain personal hygiene, consume clean and cooked food and water, and seek immediate medical attention if they experience symptoms suggestive of GBS.
