Mon Feb 17 08:26:43 UTC 2025: ## Bangladeshi Vessel Carrying Fly Ash Sinks in West Bengal River
**Kolkata, Feb 17, 2025** – A Bangladeshi vessel transporting fly ash from Budge Budge to Bangladesh has sunk in the Muriganga river in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district after striking a sandbar on February 13th. All crew members are safe and currently at the Sagar police station.
According to Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) officials, the fly ash is currently being evacuated to allow the vessel to be towed back to Bangladesh. IWAI regional head GJ Reddy confirmed the evacuation process is underway.
However, a video circulating online, allegedly showing the vessel dumping fly ash into the river, has raised concerns among local fishermen who rely on the Muriganga for their livelihood. They fear potential river contamination.
A Kolkata Port official stated that the incident poses no threat to port operations as no port-bound ships use that particular channel. Sandbars are a common cause of vessel damage, with incidents often occurring at night due to navigational difficulties.
