**Mumbai, India –** Anand Mahindra, Chairman of Mahindra & Mahindra, has expressed his readiness to compete with Tesla as the electric vehicle (EV) market in India heats up. Following Tesla’s registration in Pune and recent reports of the company recruiting in India, Mahindra responded to a social media query about Tesla’s potential impact. He stated that he’s faced similar competitive challenges since India’s economic liberalization in 1991, and Mahindra remains committed to long-term success.
Tesla’s entry into India has been a long-awaited event, marked by negotiations over import tariffs. After initially resisting the import of Completely Built Units (CBUs), the Indian government recently reduced tariffs on fully imported EVs from 110% to 70%. This concession, coupled with a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Tesla CEO Elon Musk at the White House, significantly increases the likelihood of Tesla’s market entry.
Mahindra, a major player in the Indian EV market, recently launched two new electric vehicles, the BE 6 and XEV 9e, receiving a record 30,179 bookings within an hour of opening. The company plans to launch several more EVs in the coming years, leveraging its INGLO architecture to potentially challenge Tata Motors’ current dominance in the Indian four-wheeler EV sector. Mahindra’s confident stance suggests a robust competitive landscape is developing in the burgeoning Indian EV market.
