Mon Feb 17 08:45:04 UTC 2025: ## SGPC President Resigns After Condemning Jathedar Dismissal
**Amritsar, February 17, 2025** – Harjinder Singh Dhami, president of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), resigned from his post on Monday, citing moral responsibility for the controversial dismissal of Giani Harpreet Singh as the jathedar of Takht Sri Damdama Sahib.
Dhami’s resignation follows sharp criticism from Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Raghbir Singh, who condemned the SGPC’s December 10th decision to remove Giani Harpreet Singh over an 18-year-old domestic dispute. In a February 13th Facebook post, Jathedar Singh described the removal as “highly condemnable and unfortunate,” warning that it could harm the independence of the Takht Sahibs.
Dhami, in a press address in Amritsar, stated that he shared Jathedar Singh’s condemnation and took full responsibility for the decision as SGPC president. He emphasized his unwavering commitment to the Akal Takht, the highest temporal seat of Sikhs. Furthermore, he submitted his resignation from a seven-member committee overseeing the Shiromani Akali Dal’s new membership drive. The SGPC’s decision to dismiss Giani Harpreet Singh was based on a report from a three-member committee investigating the allegations.
