Mon Feb 17 11:20:36 UTC 2025: ## Presidents’ Day 2024: Many Offices Closed, But Most Businesses Open

**Washington, D.C.** – Millions of Americans are enjoying a long weekend today, February 17th, in observance of Presidents’ Day, although the official federal holiday remains Washington’s Birthday. While the day honors George Washington, the nation’s first president, the holiday’s evolution has led to widespread recognition of other U.S. presidents, most notably Abraham Lincoln. In fact, 24 states officially celebrate it as Presidents’ Day.

The shift to the third Monday in February in 1968, courtesy of the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, aimed to create a three-day weekend and boost productivity. This change solidified the informal name “Presidents’ Day,” a title now reflecting the holiday’s expanded scope.

As a federal holiday, many government services are affected: federal, state, and local government offices (including DMVs, city halls, courthouses, and libraries) are closed, along with the U.S. Postal Service, stock markets (Nasdaq and NYSE), and most banks (with the exception of TD Bank). The U.S. bond market is also closed.

However, most private sector businesses remain open, offering a normal business day for many. Major retailers like Walmart, Target, Costco, and Kroger are all operating, as are shopping malls, supermarkets, and restaurants. UPS is operating normally and FedEx is open with modified service.

The holiday’s history traces back to 1796, when Americans first celebrated George Washington’s birthday. It wasn’t until 1879 that Congress officially declared February 22nd a federal holiday. The current celebration serves as a tribute not just to Washington and Lincoln, but to all who have held the office of President of the United States.
