Mon Feb 17 17:58:56 UTC 2025: ## Guillain-Barré Syndrome Outbreak in Andhra Pradesh Claims Life, Hospitalizes Eight in Guntur

**Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, February 17, 2025** – A concerning outbreak of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) continues to grip Andhra Pradesh, with a recent fatality and eight new cases reported at Guntur Government General Hospital (GGH). The state has already recorded 59 GBS cases, resulting in two deaths.

A 50-year-old woman, Kamalamma, from Alasandalapalli village in Prakasam district, succumbed to GBS at GGH on Sunday. She was admitted after experiencing severe muscle pain and initially treated at Giddalur Area Hospital. Eight more GBS patients are currently receiving treatment at GGH, with one, identified only as Ashirvadam, in critical condition and receiving intensive care. Two patients have recovered and been discharged, while four others are in general wards.

The six-year-old boy from Srikakulam district who died last week also succumbed to the syndrome.

Doctors report that GBS symptoms vary widely between individuals, ranging from cough and fever to leg numbness and diarrhea. The disease attacks the nervous system, causing the body to produce antibodies that damage nerves. The progression typically spans 10-15 days, affecting the entire nervous system and brain. Authorities urge anyone experiencing these symptoms to seek immediate medical attention. Delayed treatment is cited as a major factor contributing to fatalities.
