Mon Feb 17 05:52:29 UTC 2025: ## Delhi Railway Station Stampede Kills 18, Sparking Outrage and Calls for Accountability
**New Delhi, India** – A deadly stampede at New Delhi Railway Station on Saturday night claimed the lives of 18 people and injured dozens more, sparking widespread outrage and demands for accountability from the Indian Railways. Initial investigations suggest that confusion over train announcements, exacerbated by a poor public address system, contributed significantly to the tragedy.
The stampede occurred amidst a large crowd waiting for trains heading to Prayagraj, a city hosting the Maha Kumbh Mela religious festival. According to Delhi Police, the confusion arose from two trains with nearly identical names – the Prayagraj Express and the Prayagraj Special – being announced around the same time on different platforms. Passengers reportedly mistook the announcements, leading to a surge towards Platform 16, where the Prayagraj Special was departing, further compounded by delays to other trains headed to Prayagraj.
Experts, including former Northern Railway chief signal and telecom engineer K.P. Arya, criticized the railway’s public address system, suggesting that inadequate sound volume and unclear announcements played a crucial role. Arya highlighted the importance of utilizing the manual announcement system in such situations.
The incident has triggered a political firestorm. While several political leaders expressed condolences and promised aid to the victims’ families – including ex-gratia payments from both the central government and several state governments – opposition parties have fiercely criticized the Railway Ministry’s response and called for the resignation of Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. Congress leader Supriya Shrinate went so far as to call the event a “genocide,” accusing the government of negligence and attempting to cover up the incident. The Congress party has organized protests and burned an effigy of the minister.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) echoed similar sentiments, demanding adequate compensation and accusing the government of attempting to downplay the severity of the situation. The party pointed to alleged platform change announcements as a further contributing factor.
A high-level committee has been formed by the Railways to investigate the incident. While Railway Police stated they deployed sufficient personnel, questions remain regarding crowd management, communication protocols, and the adequacy of safety measures at the station. The post-mortem examinations revealed that traumatic asphyxia was the cause of death for all five bodies examined. The search continues for those still missing after the incident. The ongoing investigation will aim to determine the full extent of responsibility for this tragic event.
