Mon Feb 17 16:19:52 UTC 2025: ## Kerala to Go Virtual with Border Checkposts by April 1
**Thiruvananthapuram, February 17, 2025** – Kerala is set to revolutionize its border checkposts by transitioning to a fully virtual system by April 1st. This initiative, spearheaded by the Goods and Services Tax (GST) department, Motor Vehicles department (MVD), and the National Informatics Centre (NIC), aims to curb tax evasion and corruption.
The new system will integrate Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras at major GST checkposts with the MVD’s Vahan website. A new mobile application developed by NIC will alert MVD officials when vehicles with potential tax evasion issues cross state borders. Officials will then intercept vehicles at regularly rotating checkpoints, ensuring tax evaders cannot predict enforcement locations. All inspections will be recorded via dash cameras in MVD vehicles.
This move follows the recent closure of all 20 physical MVD checkposts in Kerala due to widespread corruption. A recent VACB raid at Palakkad checkposts uncovered ₹3.26 lakh in unaccounted cash, highlighting the need for reform. The MVD is currently preparing to procure tablets to facilitate enforcement under the new virtual system.
