Mon Feb 17 05:02:02 UTC 2025: ## 4.0 Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Delhi-NCR; No Major Damage Reported
**New Delhi, February 17, 2025** – A 4.0 magnitude earthquake struck Delhi and its surrounding areas this morning at 5:36 AM IST, prompting residents to rush out of their homes. The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) reported the epicenter near Durgabai Deshmukh College of Special Education in Dhaula Kuan, with a focal depth of five kilometers. While strong tremors were felt across Delhi, Noida, Greater Noida, and Ghaziabad, there have been no immediate reports of significant damage or injuries.
Witnesses described a loud sound accompanying the shaking. One vendor at New Delhi Railway Station recounted the scene, stating that “everything was shaking” and customers screamed in fear. Another resident of Ghaziabad described the tremors as the strongest they had ever experienced. A passenger at the railway station said the shaking felt like a train running underground.
Following the quake, Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged calm and adherence to safety precautions, advising vigilance for potential aftershocks. Acting Delhi Chief Minister Atishi also expressed concern and offered prayers for the safety of all residents. Delhi Police issued a statement on X (formerly Twitter), assuring citizens of their safety and providing the emergency helpline number, 112.
Authorities are closely monitoring the situation. Although Delhi is located in a high seismic zone (zone IV), this is the first significant earthquake in the region in recent weeks. Smaller tremors have been reported in the Dhaula Kuan area periodically. The NCS encourages the public to download the BhooKamp app for further information.
