Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh, Feb 16, 2025 – A woman in Saharanpur has accused her in-laws of attempting to murder her by injecting her with an HIV-infected syringe after a dowry dispute. Police have registered a case against four individuals, including her husband and brother-in-law, under sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) related to attempted murder, and also under the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act and the Dowry Prohibition Act.

According to Station House Officer Rojant Tyagi, the woman’s father alleged that his daughter, Sonal, was married to Abhishek from Haridwar in February 2023. He claims to have provided substantial dowry, including cash, jewelry, and a car, but the in-laws remained unsatisfied, demanding a more expensive car and an additional ₹25 lakh (approximately $30,000 USD). When these demands were not met, the woman was allegedly subjected to mental and physical harassment before being expelled from the house.

Sonal’s subsequent health deterioration led to a hospital admission, where she tested positive for HIV. Her parents allege that she was given unknown medications and the infected injection, putting her life at risk.

The case was registered on February 11th following a court order. While the exact date of the alleged injection is still under investigation, police are pursuing the allegations. The investigation is ongoing.
