LIMA, PERU – In a surprising Valentine’s Day operation, a Peruvian police officer dressed as a capybara apprehended a drug trafficker and seized a large quantity of cocaine and marijuana. The unusual tactic, employed by Peru’s Escuadron Verde anti-drugs unit, involved an officer in a giant rodent costume raiding a home and arresting the suspect.
Over 1,700 packages of cocaine and marijuana were confiscated during the raid, according to police officials. Unit leader Col Pedro Rojas explained the unconventional approach: “On this occasion, Valentine’s Day, lover’s day, we sought to camouflage ourselves with the character of the capybara.”
This isn’t the first time the Escuadron Verde has used creative costumes during operations. Previous raids have featured officers dressed as Marvel superheroes such as Spiderman, Captain America, and Black Widow, typically during holidays like Halloween and Christmas. Last year’s Halloween raid, featuring officers as Deadpool and Wolverine, resulted in the seizure of significant amounts of cocaine and coca base paste.
The video of the capybara raid quickly went viral, sparking humorous reactions on social media. Many users joked about the trafficker’s humiliation at being arrested by a giant rodent.
Peru is a major producer of coca leaf and cocaine, according to the United Nations, making the efforts of the Escuadron Verde particularly significant in the country’s ongoing fight against drug trafficking. The use of unconventional methods, while generating amusement, highlights the unit’s innovative approach to tackling this persistent problem.
