Sun Feb 16 15:03:43 UTC 2025: ## Madurai’s Shrinking Roads: Encroachments and Haphazard Parking Choke City Streets

**Madurai, February 16, 2025** – Madurai city is grappling with a severe shrinking of road carriage space due to rampant encroachments, haphazard parking, and inadequate infrastructure management, according to residents and activists. The problem, highlighted in a 2020 Madras High Court observation criticizing the lack of civic sense among residents, has worsened significantly.

Key areas affected include Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Road, Anna Bus Stand, Kamarajar Salai, and numerous other junctions and streets. Commercial establishments are encroaching upon pavements, while eateries lack designated parking, leading to vehicles blocking roads. Garbage disposal further exacerbates the issue.

Advocate Seeni Syed Amma described the situation near Bharathi Nagar as a “nightmare,” citing overcrowding from commercial establishments and garbage accumulation. Activist V.P. Manikandan noted the drastic reduction of road space in SS Colony, now a commercial hub, making even ambulance access difficult. He also highlighted issues near Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple.

Improper road restoration after pipeline work and road repairs, coupled with buses stopping in the middle of the road instead of designated stops, contribute to the problem. Haphazard parking at bus stops and street vendors occupying significant road space add to the congestion.

Residents called for improved solid waste management, stricter enforcement against returning encroachments, and better coordination between the Madurai Corporation, traffic police, and the Highways Department (for State Highways within city limits). A traffic police officer acknowledged the problem, suggesting dedicated commercial hubs and exploring solutions like hydraulic parking systems.

The 2020 High Court order, while criticizing the lack of civic responsibility, also empowered the Corporation to take action. A subsequent 2024 order directed the removal of obstructive arches in some areas and improved traffic regulation on Melur Road. The ongoing challenges, however, underscore the urgent need for a comprehensive solution to restore adequate road space in Madurai.
