Sun Feb 16 15:10:00 UTC 2025: ## Andhra Pradesh Reports First Guillain-Barré Syndrome Death; 17 Cases Confirmed

**Guntur, Andhra Pradesh – February 16, 2025** – Andhra Pradesh has reported its first death from Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), a rare neurological disorder. Kamalamma, a woman from Prakasam district, passed away on Sunday at Guntur Government General Hospital (GGH) after contracting the illness.

Kamalamma’s case first emerged two days prior in Alasandlapalli village, Komarolu mandal, Prakasam district. She experienced high fever, muscle weakness, and paralysis in her legs before being transferred to GGH for treatment. Following her death, the Andhra Pradesh government has initiated a heightened alert. Health officials conducted screenings in her village, but no further cases were detected.

The state’s health department has confirmed a total of 17 GBS cases in Andhra Pradesh. Seven patients are currently receiving treatment at GGH, with some in critical condition and requiring intensive care. The hospital is reportedly seeing an influx of patients with suspected GBS.

Guillain-Barré syndrome is characterized by symptoms such as numbness, muscle weakness, diarrhea, abdominal pain, fever, and vomiting. It is believed to be triggered by a bacterial infection often contracted through contaminated food or water. The illness primarily affects children and the elderly, potentially leading to paralysis if left untreated. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial for a positive outcome.

The emergence of GBS follows recent concerns over bird flu in the Telugu states. The syndrome has also caused alarm in other states such as Maharashtra, Kerala, and West Bengal, and recently spread to Telangana before reaching Andhra Pradesh.
