Liverpool and Everton have been charged by the Football Association (FA) for failing to control their players following a tumultuous Merseyside derby at Goodison Park on Wednesday. The charges stem from a post-match melee sparked by a late equaliser for Everton and subsequent confrontations between players.
Liverpool manager Arne Slot has also been charged with improper conduct, insulting and/or abusive language towards the referee, Michael Oliver, and an assistant referee. This resulted in Slot’s red card. His assistant, Sipke Hulshoff, also received a red card and faces a similar charge for his behaviour.
The late goal, awarded after a VAR review, ignited the controversy. Liverpool protested the decision, believing a foul had occurred in the build-up. Everton midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure’s celebration in front of the Liverpool fans led to a confrontation with Liverpool’s Curtis Jones, resulting in both players receiving their marching orders. Slot and Hulshoff’s subsequent approach to the referee escalated the situation.
Slot acknowledged his actions, stating that “emotions got the better of me,” but the FA charges will now be assessed. Both clubs, along with Slot and Hulshoff, have until February 19th to respond. Despite the controversy, Liverpool remain seven points clear at the top of the Premier League table. Slot is expected to manage Liverpool in their upcoming match against Wolves. An earlier report of a two-match ban for Slot was later retracted due to human error.
