Sun Feb 16 11:53:00 UTC 2025: ## Delhi Railway Station Stampede Kills 18, Railway Inquiry Launched

**NEW DELHI** – A stampede at New Delhi Railway Station on Saturday night resulted in the deaths of at least 18 people, including 11 women and four children. Dozens more were injured, many with lower limb and bone fractures, after a surge of passengers attempting to board trains bound for the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj.

Initial eyewitness accounts suggested a last-minute platform change announcement caused the panic. However, Delhi Police clarified that the confusion stemmed from the simultaneous arrival of two special trains to Prayagraj – the Prayagraj Express on platform 14 and the Prayagraj Special on platform 16. The announcement of the Prayagraj Special arriving at platform 16, coupled with delays to three of four other Prayagraj-bound trains, led to overcrowding and the ensuing stampede. A railway official also stated that a passenger falling on the stairs contributed to the incident.

Northern Railway’s Chief Public Relations Officer, Himanshu Shekhar Upadhyay, denied any platform changes or train cancellations, stating that all trains ran according to schedule. To investigate the incident, a two-member high-level committee, comprising senior railway officials, has been formed and has begun collecting video footage from the station.
