**Bengaluru, February 16, 2025** – Sixty-one railway stations across Karnataka are slated for a major upgrade under the Indian Railways’ Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. The ambitious project, estimated to cost ₹2,000 crore, aims to modernize infrastructure and significantly improve passenger amenities.
Many of the targeted stations haven’t seen redevelopment in years. The scheme encompasses a wide range of improvements, including enhanced station buildings, improved access, upgraded waiting halls and toilets, free Wi-Fi, better passenger information systems, and facilities for Divyangjans (people with disabilities). Sustainable solutions, such as ballastless tracks, and the construction of “roof plazas” are also planned. Some stations may even be developed into city centers in the long term.
Fifteen stations in the Bengaluru division of the South Western Railway (SWR) are included, with names like Bangarpet, Whitefield, and K.R. Puram on the list. While the project’s scope is substantial, officials have not yet provided a concrete timeline, citing the complexity of the work and required clearances. Funding will come from the Plan Head – 53 ‘Customer Amenities’, managed at the zonal railway level, not state-wise.
The Amrit Bharat Station Scheme prioritizes integrating stations with surrounding city areas and improving multimodal transport connectivity. The overall goal is to create safer, more accessible, and more modern railway stations for Karnataka’s commuters.
