**Puducherry, February 15, 2025** – A 25-year-old science teacher has been arrested in Puducherry for allegedly sexually assaulting a six-year-old student. Manikandan, a resident of Mudaliarpet, was apprehended by Thavalakuppam police following a medical examination that confirmed the abuse. The incident came to light after the child fell ill. Manikandan has been charged under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
Following the revelation on Friday evening, angry parents and villagers protested outside the school, demanding the school’s closure and action against the administration for failing to prevent the assault. The protest, which lasted into the night, was eventually called off after police negotiations and promises of swift action.
The Students Federation of India (SFI) condemned the incident, highlighting concerns about student safety in educational institutions. They cited this assault alongside a recent incident where students were injured due to a school wall collapse as evidence of inadequate safety measures.
