Sat Feb 15 06:13:21 UTC 2025: ## Taiwan Rejects Trump’s Claim of “Taken” Semiconductor Industry
**Taipei, Taiwan –** Taiwan’s top technology official has firmly rejected former U.S. President Donald Trump’s assertion that Taiwan unfairly acquired dominance in the semiconductor industry. In a Facebook post on Saturday, Wu Cheng-wen, head of Taiwan’s National Science and Technology Council, countered Trump’s recent claims, emphasizing the island’s decades-long investment and expertise in building its world-leading semiconductor sector.
Wu highlighted Taiwan’s meticulous development of the industry since the 1970s, including its crucial role in establishing TSMC, the world’s largest contract chipmaker. He argued that the semiconductor industry’s complexity necessitates a global division of labor, with each nation contributing its specialized strengths. Japan, for example, excels in chemical and equipment manufacturing, while the U.S. leads in chip design and application.
“The semiconductor industry is highly complex and requires precise specialization and division of labor,” Wu stated. “Given that each country has its own unique industrial strengths, there is no need for a single nation to fully control or monopolize all technologies globally.”
Taiwan, Wu affirmed, remains committed to collaborating with friendly democratic nations to ensure a reliable and diverse global semiconductor supply chain. This statement comes in response to Trump’s repeated claims that Taiwan “took” the semiconductor industry from the U.S. and his desire to bring chip manufacturing back to the United States. While Wu did not directly name Trump, his comments directly addressed the former president’s criticisms.
