**Qusayr, Syria –** A Syrian security sweep near the Lebanese border has uncovered a defunct drug factory allegedly operated by Hezbollah, the Lebanese militant group. The operation follows the December 8th ouster of Bashar al-Assad, with Syrian forces now cracking down on drug and weapons smuggling in the Qusayr area, once a stronghold for Hezbollah.

Major Nadim Madkhana, head of Syria’s border security force in Homs province, confirmed the discovery of the factory, along with others used by Hezbollah and remnants of the Assad regime. Large quantities of captagon, a potent synthetic drug, were found, highlighting the alleged use of the drug trade by both the former regime and Hezbollah for funding.

Hezbollah, which supported Assad’s forces for years, withdrew its militants from the region following his ouster. Syrian forces have encountered resistance from Hezbollah loyalists and former regime members in the area, including clashes involving rocket launchers. Evidence of a hasty retreat by Hezbollah, including rotting food in abandoned facilities, was discovered.

Residents report that Hezbollah provided cover for smugglers operating at the porous Syria-Lebanon border. The area, historically known for smuggling, saw the displacement of thousands of Syrians during the war. Now, with Assad’s removal, some displaced Syrians are returning to Qusayr, reclaiming their homes and lives after years of Hezbollah’s control. Syrian and Lebanese forces have begun coordinating border security efforts to address the ongoing security challenges.
