**Kozhikode, Kerala – February 15, 2025** – Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has expressed concern over the rising prevalence of superstition and human sacrifices in the state, despite advancements in science and government initiatives. Speaking at the inauguration of various projects and a scientific conclave at the Centre for Water Resources Development and Management (CWRDM) in Kozhikode, Mr. Vijayan stressed the urgent need for increased popularization of science.
He highlighted the disparity between scientific progress and societal beliefs, noting that while one side of society embraces scientific education, the other witnesses a surge in superstitious practices. Mr. Vijayan emphasized that this growing belief in superstition is linked to a lack of serious effort in disseminating scientific knowledge.
The Chief Minister pointed to the projected demand for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) professionals by 2050, stating that merely including new scientific fields in school textbooks is insufficient. He advocated for a deeper understanding of scientific principles among the next generation, urging discussions and reforms in science education.
Mr. Vijayan criticized the prevailing mindset that limits science to students and researchers, calling for a broader dissemination of scientific knowledge to benefit everyone. He contrasted the lack of focus on scientific education with the significant airtime dedicated to superstition-based programs on television.
The Chief Minister concluded by emphasizing that the application of scientific knowledge for public benefit is paramount. He reiterated the Kerala government’s commitment to utilizing scientific advancements for social progress and the betterment of humanity.
