**New Delhi, February 15, 2025** – Samajwadi Party MP Iqra Choudhary has petitioned the Supreme Court to ensure effective implementation of the Places of Worship (Special Provisions) Act, 1991. The Act aims to maintain the religious character of places of worship as it stood on August 15, 1947.
Ms. Choudhary, representing Kairana in the Lok Sabha, argues that recent legal challenges to mosques and dargahs threaten communal harmony and India’s secular fabric. The Supreme Court, hearing the plea on Friday, listed it for further consideration on February 17th. Senior advocate Kapil Sibal represented Ms. Choudhary.
This case follows a similar plea from AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi, which the court is also reviewing. The Akhil Bhartiya Sant Samiti, a Hindu organization, and the Congress party have also submitted interventions, with the former seeking to participate in cases challenging the 1991 Act and the latter opposing such challenges. The court’s decision will have significant implications for religious freedom and the legal framework protecting places of worship in India.
