**Moscow, February 14, 2025** – A year after the death of Alexei Navalny, the prominent Russian opposition leader, his influence among young Russians has significantly diminished, according to a new report. Fear of reprisal and a general apathy towards politics have contributed to a chilling effect on public discourse surrounding Navalny and his anti-corruption activism.
Interviews with young Muscovites reveal a prevailing atmosphere of silence. While some privately acknowledge Navalny’s efforts, openly discussing him risks fines or imprisonment, given the Kremlin’s intensified crackdown on dissent following the Ukraine offensive. The government has labeled Navalny’s organization extremist, leading to the imprisonment of his allies and the blacklisting of his wife.
This suppression of dissent has led to a widespread political apathy among young people, many of whom were once ardent supporters of Navalny. Several young people interviewed stated they either knew little about Navalny or were simply indifferent to his legacy. One young woman, a voter in upcoming presidential elections, expressed a preference for stability under Vladimir Putin, reflecting the generation’s lack of experience with alternative leadership.
Denis Volkov, director of the independent Levada Center, attributes this shift to the Kremlin’s tightening grip on power and the silencing of opposition voices. While acknowledging Navalny’s significant support among young people in the past, Volkov notes that the war in Ukraine has drastically altered the political landscape, effectively eliminating the vocal opposition. He suggests that a return to anti-Kremlin sentiment might only emerge following the conflict and a potential rapprochement with the West. For now, however, young Russians overwhelmingly express disinterest in political engagement.
