Thu Feb 13 12:25:22 UTC 2025: ## Jamia University Students Detained After Protest Over Disciplinary Action

**New Delhi, February 14** – Delhi Police have detained approximately 14 Jamia Millia Islamia University students following a protest against disciplinary action taken against two PhD students. The protest, which began Monday, saw students condemning what they termed the administration’s “suppressive action against student activism.”

According to police sources, the university had issued show-cause notices to the two PhD students last year for allegedly organizing a protest. The university alleges that protesting students damaged university property, including the central canteen, and broke the gate of the security advisor’s office. This prompted the administration to request police intervention to maintain law and order. Police responded by removing more than 10 students from the protest site and deploying heavy security around the campus.

A university statement claims that the protesting students disrupted classes, prevented access to the central library, and violated university rules. They also allegedly possessed objectionable items. The university administration stated that despite offering to discuss the students’ demands through a committee, the students refused to negotiate.

Student leader Sonakshi stated that the protesters’ key demands include the withdrawal of the show-cause notices issued to the two PhD students, the revocation of a 2022 office memorandum restricting protests on campus, the cancellation of a ₹50,000 fine for graffiti and posters, and a guarantee of no future disciplinary action against participating students. The disciplinary committee is scheduled to meet on February 25th to review the two students’ involvement in a 2024 event commemorating the anniversary of the 2019 Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protests. The university had not permitted this event.

The detained students remain in custody pending further investigation.
