**Washington, D.C. – February 13, 2025** – President Donald Trump has nominated Paul Kapur, an Indian-American expert on South Asian security, to serve as the next Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs. Kapur, currently a professor at the United States Naval Postgraduate School, will replace Donald Lu, whose term concluded on January 17th.

The Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs oversees U.S. foreign policy concerning Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. Kapur’s extensive experience includes serving on the State Department’s Policy Planning Staff from 2020-2021, focusing on South and Central Asia, Indo-Pacific strategy, and U.S.-India relations. He is also a co-author of “India, Pakistan and the Bomb” and co-editor of “The Challenges of Nuclear Security.” His academic credentials include a PhD from the University of Chicago.
