LINCOLN, NE – Greg Sharpe, the longtime voice of Nebraska Husker football and baseball, passed away Friday at the age of 61 after a battle with pancreatic cancer. Sharpe, who was recently named the 2024 Nebraska Sportscaster of the Year, publicly announced his diagnosis in April.
For 17 seasons, Sharpe’s passionate and energetic calls captivated Husker fans. He began his tenure with the football team in 2007 and also served as the play-by-play announcer for Husker baseball since 2008. Beyond his booming voice and infectious personality, his family described him as a devoted husband, father, brother, and friend.
Nebraska Athletic Director Troy Dannen released a statement expressing the department’s deep sorrow and highlighting Sharpe’s impact on the Husker community. “This is a tough day for everyone,” Dannen said, noting the loss felt by those close to Sharpe, his colleagues, and Husker fans who cherished his iconic calls. “Greg was an incredible person and was a friend to everyone. Simply put, he defined what it meant to be a Husker, and he will always be a Husker.”
Sharpe’s family acknowledged the support received from the University of Nebraska, Playfly Sports, and Husker Nation during his illness, stating that this support helped him continue his fight and live life to the fullest. He is survived by his wife, Amy, and three daughters, Emily, Campbell, and Taylor. His legacy, they said, will live on through the moments he narrated and the relationships he built.
