BATON ROUGE, LA – In a stunning upset before a crowd of 13,386, the No. 2 LSU Gymnastics team defeated the previously undefeated No. 1 Oklahoma Sooners, 198.050-197.675, on Friday night. The victory marks LSU’s first win over a No. 1 ranked opponent since 2021 and their first regular season win over a top-ranked Oklahoma team since 2016.
The Tigers achieved the win fueled by season-high scores on vault (49.600) and floor (49.700). Freshman Kailin Chio continued her impressive streak, claiming her third consecutive all-around title with a score of 39.725, and also sharing the floor title with a 9.95. Other LSU event winners included graduate student Sierra Ballard, who secured her first career beam title with a 9.95, and sophomore Amari Drayton, who also shared the floor title with a 9.95. Senior Haleigh Bryant also shared the floor title.
LSU head coach Jay Clark praised his team’s resilience, noting their ability to overcome challenges on bars and deliver strong performances on beam and floor. He also acknowledged Oklahoma’s consistent excellence.
The meet was a tight contest throughout, with LSU holding a slight lead after the first rotation and a tie at the halfway point. The Tigers’ strong floor exercise in the final rotation secured the victory.
Chio’s performance added to her already impressive season total of 11 event titles. Bryant earned her third title of the season, while Drayton and Ballard claimed their first event titles.
LSU will next face No. 8 Kentucky on Friday, February 21st.
