**GAZA CITY** – Satellite imagery analysis has revealed that Israel has demolished dozens of homes in Rafah, Gaza, in violation of a recently agreed ceasefire, according to Al Jazeera’s fact-checking agency, Sanad. The images, taken between January 19th and February 1st, show the destruction of at least 64 buildings in Rafah’s as-Salam, Idari, and Tel Zaarab neighborhoods, located just 700 meters from the Egyptian border. Further analysis also identified six demolished homes in Tal as-Sultan, west of Rafah.
The demolitions come despite a January 19th ceasefire agreement that stipulated a reduction and eventual withdrawal of Israeli forces. Instead, satellite images show Israel has continued construction in the area, including building sand fortifications, a new military outpost, and a 1.7km road at the Rafah crossing. This activity, coupled with the home demolitions, has been condemned as a war crime by Palestinian defense analyst Hamze Attar, citing violations of the Fourth Geneva Convention.
The actions have left thousands of Rafah residents displaced, with Rafah Mayor Ahmed al-Sufi estimating that 90 percent of homes in the city have been damaged, and approximately 200,000 people sheltering in other areas of Gaza. The continued Israeli presence in the Philadelphi Corridor, in breach of the 1979 peace agreement with Egypt, further exacerbates the situation.
Adding to the accusations of ceasefire violations, Munir al-Bursh, director-general of the Gaza Ministry of Health, reported that at least 118 people have died since the ceasefire began, due to Israeli attacks, unexploded ordnance, or injuries sustained prior to the agreement. Insufficient humanitarian aid, including food, fuel, and shelter, is also compounding the crisis. The ongoing situation underscores the severe humanitarian consequences facing Rafah’s civilian population. Israel has yet to comment on these specific allegations.
