Fri Feb 14 15:08:04 UTC 2025: ## China Launches Planetary Defense Initiative Amid Asteroid Threat

**BEIJING** – Amidst growing concerns over a potential asteroid impact in 2032, China has initiated recruitment for a national planetary defense force. The State Administration of Science, Technology, and Industry for National Defense is seeking three specialists to focus on near-Earth asteroid monitoring and early warning systems. The recruitment drive, advertised on Chinese social media, targets recent graduates under 35 with relevant qualifications and a strong commitment to the Chinese Communist Party.

This move follows a recent increase in the projected probability of asteroid 2024 YR4 colliding with Earth. Initially assessed at a 1.3% chance of impact, NASA has revised the probability to 2.3%. While not large enough to cause a global catastrophe, the 130-300 foot asteroid could inflict significant damage to a major city. The asteroid currently ranks a 3 on the Torino Impact Hazard Scale, indicating a potential threat. Potential impact zones include the Eastern Pacific Ocean, parts of South America, the Atlantic Ocean, Africa, the Arabian Sea, and South Asia.

China’s initiative goes beyond recruitment. The nation also unveiled plans last year for its own asteroid deflection mission, mirroring NASA’s successful DART mission. This mission, slated for around 2030, aims to observe and potentially alter the trajectory of near-Earth asteroids through a kinetic impact. The recruitment and planned mission underscore China’s growing commitment to planetary defense and its ambition to become a leading player in this critical field.
