**Chennai, February 13, 2025** – Apollo Hospitals, Chennai, announced the launch of a groundbreaking advanced epilepsy surgery program aimed at improving the lives of individuals suffering from drug-resistant epilepsy. The program utilizes state-of-the-art technologies, including augmented reality-enabled neuro-navigation, intraoperative ultrasound, and intraoperative electrocorticography, to achieve greater precision in diagnosis and treatment.
The hospital highlighted the significant impact epilepsy has on patients’ quality of life, often leading to social stigma, isolation, and psychological distress. According to Dr. Arvind Sukumaran, senior consultant neurosurgeon at Apollo Hospitals, the new program aims to provide effective treatment allowing patients to regain normalcy and independence. Dr. S. Muthukani, senior consultant neurologist and epileptologist, emphasized that not all epilepsy presents with obvious seizures, urging awareness of less visible symptoms such as staring spells, confusion, or unusual sensations.
The program’s success is already evident, with 13 out of 15 pilot surgeries resulting in complete seizure freedom. Apollo Hospitals plans to further enhance its capabilities by introducing robotic stereotactic EEG technology. A patient who underwent the surgery, Sangeetha, encouraged others living with epilepsy to actively seek solutions and diagnoses. The advanced imaging techniques employed include 3T MRI, a dedicated video EEG suite, and PET CT scanning.
