**LOS ANGELES** – Anthony Mackie’s debut as Captain America in “Captain America: Brave New World” has taken flight at the box office, securing the top opening weekend of the year so far. The Marvel Studios film raked in $12 million in Thursday previews and is projected to earn between $80-85 million domestically over the traditional three-day weekend, potentially reaching $90-95 million with the added President’s Day holiday. International projections add another $110 million to the total.
The film, which cost over $180 million to produce (excluding marketing), surpasses the opening weekend gross of 2011’s “Captain America: The First Avenger” and comes close to that of 2014’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier.” While falling short of the colossal opening of 2016’s “Captain America: Civil War,” “Brave New World” still marks a significant box office win amidst a relatively slow year for cinema.
Mackie takes on the mantle of Captain America after Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers retired in “Avengers: Endgame.” The film features a star-studded cast including Harrison Ford as President Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, who transforms into the Red Hulk, alongside Danny Ramirez, Shira Haas, Carl Lumbly, Tim Blake Nelson, and Giancarlo Esposito. The plot centers around Captain America navigating international conflict and super-powered mayhem.
Meanwhile, “Paddington in Peru,” the third installment in the popular children’s franchise, opened with $600,000 in Thursday previews and is expected to earn $15-17 million domestically over the holiday weekend. It has already amassed $103 million internationally.
