Wed Feb 12 20:39:00 UTC 2025: ## UN Report Condemns Bangladesh’s Post-Hasina Government for Human Rights Abuses

**DHAKA, BANGLADESH** – A new report by the UN Human Rights Office (OHCHR) has condemned the interim government of Bangladesh, led by Professor Mohammad Yunus, for widespread human rights abuses and violations that occurred in July and August 2024, following the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League government.

The report, based on testimonies from senior officials and other sources, details a systematic campaign of repression involving police, paramilitary forces, the military, intelligence agencies, and pro-Awami League elements. These actions, the report states, were carried out with the knowledge and direction of the political leadership.

The OHCHR investigation found that violence disproportionately targeted minority Hindu and indigenous communities, including attacks on homes and places of worship, particularly after the Hasina government’s collapse. While the Yunus government has welcomed the report as a “thorough independent investigation,” it attributes the attacks on minority groups to “intersecting motives,” including religious and ethnic discrimination and revenge against perceived Awami League supporters.

However, human rights activist Suhas Chakma criticized the report, arguing that its scope, limited to August 5-15, 2024, by the interim government, prevented a full accounting of human rights violations under both the previous and current administrations. The report’s findings highlight the urgent need for accountability for the abuses committed during this period of instability in Bangladesh.
