CHENNAI, INDIA – A senior Chennai Police officer holding the rank of Joint Commissioner has been suspended following allegations of sexual harassment by a female colleague. The Internal Complaints Committee is currently investigating the matter. A senior police official confirmed the suspension to NDTV, stating that action will be taken according to regulations and a report submitted to the Director General of Police.
This suspension is the latest in a string of sexual assault allegations rocking Tamil Nadu, involving various sectors including government institutions and educational campuses. Recent cases include the arrest of three teachers from a state-run school for allegedly assaulting a 13-year-old student, the sexual assault of a female student at Anna University, and the alleged assault of an 18-year-old woman in a moving auto-rickshaw outside Chennai.
The surge in reported sexual assaults has sparked intense criticism of the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party’s handling of law and order. While the DMK maintains that law enforcement is effective and that arrests have been made in all cases, the opposition AIADMK and BJP have seized on the incidents, particularly the Anna University case where the accused, a roadside biryani vendor named Gnanasekaran, was alleged to have links to the DMK. Chief Minister MK Stalin acknowledged the suspect’s connection to the party as a sympathizer but denied formal membership. He emphasized the government’s commitment to women’s safety and highlighted the filing of charges under the Goondas Act against the suspect.
Tamil Nadu Law Minister S Regupathy stated that the government is confident in its ability to bring perpetrators to justice, contrasting the current situation with what he described as a climate of fear and delayed investigations during the AIADMK’s tenure. The issue has emerged as a significant political battleground in the lead-up to next year’s state assembly elections.
