**Nara, Japan (February 13, 2025)** — The influx of tourists to Nara Park, famed for its friendly wild deer, is causing an unintended consequence: a growing problem of plastic pollution threatening the animals’ lives. While visitors are permitted to feed the deer only special rice crackers, discarded food packaging and other litter are accumulating, leading to deer ingesting plastic. This can cause serious health issues and even death.
To combat this, a dedicated team of litter-pickers, known as “Beautiful Deer,” are working to clean the park. Many members of this team have disabilities, finding purpose in contributing to the preservation of Nara’s iconic deer. The team collaborates with the Nara Deer Preservation Foundation, highlighting the collaborative effort to protect the environment and the animals.
The approximately 1,300 deer residing in Nara Park, considered divine messengers in local Shinto beliefs, are facing a challenge from the very visitors who come to admire them. The situation underscores the delicate balance between tourism and environmental protection in popular tourist destinations.
