Thu Feb 13 03:30:00 UTC 2025: ## Bengaluru’s Urban Challenges: A Need for Deeper Solutions Beyond Quick Fixes

**Bengaluru, February 13, 2025** – Bengaluru, like many rapidly growing Indian cities, faces a multitude of urban challenges, including severe flooding, crippling traffic congestion, and escalating air pollution. While these problems might seem commonplace across metropolitan areas like Mumbai and Delhi, Balaji Parthasarathy, faculty at IIIT-Bangalore and Principal Investigator at Fairworks India project, emphasizes the importance of understanding their unique sources and impacts within each city’s context.

Parthasarathy, speaking to *The Hindu*, highlighted the work of the Centre for Information Technology and Public Policy (CITAPP) at IIIT-B. CITAPP conducts interdisciplinary research to address the social implications of technological advancements, focusing on both the supply and demand sides of technological innovation. Their research spans various topics, from spectrum allocation and e-governance to data justice and the impact of automation on work.

CITAPP’s research on Bengaluru, however, doesn’t focus on quick technological fixes. Instead, it encourages a deeper understanding of the underlying causes of urban problems. For example, while traffic congestion might seem solvable with more flyovers or signals, Parthasarathy argues that these are merely band-aid solutions. A thorough understanding of the political structures and power dynamics influencing urban planning is crucial for lasting change.

The researchers emphasize the need to analyze the historical context and identify the root causes of problems like flooding (Bengaluru’s encroached lakes versus Kolkata’s low-lying geography) and pollution (Delhi’s stubble burning versus Bhopal’s industrial legacy). This approach allows for the development of broader solutions applicable beyond a single city.

While acknowledging the potential of AI in addressing urban challenges, Parthasarathy cautions against unchecked enthusiasm and the need for careful consideration and a willingness to adapt strategies based on feedback. He stresses the importance of avoiding a simplistic “clone Silicon Valley” approach and instead learning from diverse international experiences. Ultimately, the solution lies in asking the right questions and understanding the complex interplay of technological innovation, political realities, and social impact.
