**Marseille, France –** Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron today agreed to strengthen collaboration on the India-Middle East-Europe Corridor (IMEEC), a major infrastructure project aimed at boosting trade and connectivity between Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. The announcement came during PM Modi’s visit to Marseille, where he inaugurated a new Indian consulate, further solidifying the relationship between the two nations.
The IMEEC, launched during India’s G20 presidency, will comprise two corridors: an eastern route connecting India to the Gulf, and a northern route linking the Gulf to Europe via countries including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and Israel. The initiative aims to improve maritime security, expedite the movement of goods, and enhance regional supply chains. It also seeks to mobilize $600 billion by 2027 to address infrastructure gaps in participating countries.
While the project is still in its early stages, analysts view it as a potential counter to China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). The IMEEC is designed to foster sustainable development and avoid the debt-trap diplomacy that has been criticized in relation to the BRI.
The strategic importance of Marseille, a key Mediterranean port city, was highlighted during the visit. PM Modi paid homage to Indian soldiers who fought in World War I alongside French forces, and the new consulate will serve as a bridge for enhanced cultural and economic ties. India’s significant investment in port development, having doubled its port capacity in the last decade, positions it well to benefit from this initiative.
Following his visit to France, PM Modi departed for the United States for talks with President Donald Trump.
