**New Delhi, February 13, 2025** – The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) suffered a setback in the recent Delhi Assembly elections, losing ground to the BJP. A senior AAP leader attributed the loss primarily to a significant shift in the middle-class vote. While this demographic traditionally supported the BJP in Lok Sabha elections and AAP in Assembly elections, a substantial portion voted for the BJP this time. The leader estimated that 6-7% of the approximately 10% vote share loss represents this shift.
The leader explained that the AAP’s outreach to the middle class, including meetings in December and January, proved insufficient to counter the BJP’s late-stage campaigning following the Union Budget’s middle-class tax cuts. The AAP’s campaign ended February 3rd, leaving little time to react to the budget announcement on February 1st. Further contributing to the loss, the party also lost approximately 2% of its slum-dwelling voters due to alleged intimidation tactics employed by the BJP.
Despite the loss, the AAP leader emphasized that the party still secured nearly 44% of the vote share. The party plans to focus on the upcoming Punjab Assembly elections, utilizing the time now available following the Delhi elections. Restructuring within the Delhi unit is also planned to accommodate senior leaders who will play a significant role in the Punjab campaign. The possibility of an alliance with the Congress was dismissed, with the leader suggesting it might have benefitted the BJP.
