Wed Feb 12 07:28:45 UTC 2025: ## Kerala Nursing Students Arrested for Brutal Ragging

**Kottayam, Kerala –** Five third-year nursing students have been arrested and suspended from the Government Nursing College in Kottayam following a horrific ragging incident that left three first-year students with severe physical and emotional trauma. The victims, all from Thiruvananthapuram, endured three months of abuse, beginning in November 2024.

According to a police complaint, the seniors subjected the juniors to a series of brutal acts, including forcing them to stand naked with dumbbells hung from their private parts and stabbing them with compasses. The victims were also beaten and had lotion applied to their wounds, which was then forcibly smeared into their mouths when they cried out in pain. The seniors allegedly filmed the assaults and threatened the victims with academic repercussions if they reported the abuse. The seniors also reportedly extorted money from the juniors weekly to buy alcohol, resorting to violence against those who refused.

One victim eventually confided in his father, prompting the family to file a police report. The five accused are currently in police custody and will be produced before a magistrate. This incident follows a recent suicide of a 15-year-old schoolboy in Kochi, allegedly due to bullying, highlighting the ongoing problem of ragging and harassment in educational institutions across Kerala. The arrest comes as a stark reminder of the urgent need to address the pervasive issue of ragging and ensure the safety and well-being of students.
