Wed Feb 12 15:54:05 UTC 2025: ## State Election Commission Considers NOTA Re-election Proposal
**Hyderabad, February 12, 2025** – The State Election Commission (SEC) is considering a proposal to hold re-elections in local body elections if the “None Of The Above” (NOTA) option receives more votes than any candidate. This was discussed at a meeting Wednesday with representatives from major political parties, including Congress, BJP, AAP, and others.
The SEC proposed treating NOTA as a “fictional” candidate, aiming to empower voters and prevent elections swayed by coercion or bribery. The proposal has generated varied responses. While the BRS supports the measure, Congress opposes it due to financial concerns. The BJP is awaiting the Supreme Court’s ruling on a related matter. Some parties even suggest including NOTA in single-candidate constituencies.
The SEC will make a final decision after reviewing party feedback and will seek government approval for any necessary legal amendments. Several other states, including Maharashtra, Delhi, and Haryana, already have similar re-election provisions. The SEC will also seek legal counsel before proceeding. The Supreme Court has previously affirmed the right of voters to utilize the NOTA option.
