Thu Feb 13 04:00:00 UTC 2025: ## Cubs Eyeing Justin Turner as Backup Plan to Bregman

**MESA, Ariz. —** The Chicago Cubs are considering veteran free agent Justin Turner as a potential addition should they fail to sign All-Star third baseman Alex Bregman, sources told *The Athletic* on Monday. While the Cubs are pursuing both players, their interest in Turner serves as a contingency plan.

Turner, a 40-year-old right-handed hitter with a .821 career OPS and extensive postseason experience with the Los Angeles Dodgers, is attracting attention from several teams also interested in Bregman, the highest-ranked remaining free agent. Though no longer an everyday third baseman, Turner’s versatility allows him to play first base or DH. The Boston Red Sox and Detroit Tigers are also reportedly interested in both players.

Turner’s contract demands are expected to fit comfortably within the Cubs’ budget, which is reportedly near the $241 million luxury-tax threshold. Sources suggest Turner and his wife are intrigued by the prospect of playing in Chicago.

The Cubs believe Bregman would be a valuable addition, ideally on a shorter-term, high-salary contract. However, if they miss out on Bregman, top prospect Matt Shaw is poised to take over as the Opening Day third baseman. Manager Craig Counsell stated that Shaw will get the first opportunity, with other options providing depth but less upside. The Cubs’ pursuit of Bregman mirrors their strategy last year, when they signed Cody Bellinger.
