Thu Feb 13 04:30:00 UTC 2025: ## Explosion at Shin Kong Mitsukoshi Department Store in Taichung Leaves Several Injured, One Dead

**TAICHUNG, TAIWAN** – A suspected explosion at the Shin Kong Mitsukoshi department store in Taichung’s West District today at approximately 11:00 AM has left at least eight people injured and one dead. Initial reports suggested the blast originated on the 11th or 12th floor, possibly during construction work. However, the exact cause remains under investigation.

Witnesses described hearing a loud bang followed by debris falling onto the street below. One eyewitness, Mr. Li, reported seeing a devastating scene with shattered windows and damaged building facades.

Emergency services responded swiftly, activating a mass casualty incident protocol and dispatching numerous ambulances. However, heavy midday traffic hampered rescue efforts. Police have closed off the intersection of Shizheng North 7th Road and Huilai Road, urging the public to avoid the area.

At least eight injured individuals have been transported to nearby hospitals, including the Chunggang Ching Cheng General Hospital. Among them, one woman was found without vital signs upon rescue and was pronounced dead. The condition of the others ranges from minor to severe injuries.

Shin Kong Mitsukoshi has announced the temporary closure of its Taichung Zhonggang branch while authorities investigate the cause of the explosion. Whether the incident is linked to a construction accident or other factors is still being determined. The Taichung City Fire Department is leading the investigation.
