Mon Feb 10 04:35:47 UTC 2025: ## BJP’s Verma Defeats Kejriwal in Stunning Delhi Upset

**New Delhi –** In a major upset, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Parvesh Verma has defeated incumbent Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in the New Delhi constituency. Preliminary results show Verma winning by over 4,000 votes, ending Kejriwal’s 11-year reign of three consecutive victories in Delhi. Congress candidate Sandeep Dikshit finished a distant third.

Verma, known for his controversial statements and past association with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), secured over 25,000 votes. His victory is particularly significant given his exclusion from the BJP’s 2024 Lok Sabha election list. He had previously won two consecutive parliamentary elections (2014 and 2019) from West Delhi.

The win marks a political comeback for Verma, whose inflammatory remarks during the 2020 Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protests catapulted him into the spotlight. He has faced accusations of orchestrating an attack on Kejriwal and violating election rules during the recent campaign. Past controversies include claims he could clear the Shaheen Bagh protest site “in an hour” and a call for a boycott of the Muslim community.

Despite these controversies, Verma attributed his victory to the “double-engine government,” emphasizing collaboration between the Delhi and central governments under BJP rule. The AAP has accused Verma of distributing money to voters. Investigations into these allegations are ongoing.
