CHARLOTTE, N.C. – NASCAR’s Hall of Fame welcomed four new members Friday night, celebrating the careers of legendary drivers, a pioneering team owner, and a safety innovator. The ceremony honored the grit and determination of Ricky Rudd, the enigmatic Carl Edwards, and the late Ralph Moody, while also recognizing Dr. Dean Sicking’s life-saving contributions to the sport.

Ricky Rudd, known as the “Ironman” for his record 788 consecutive starts, was lauded for his unwavering commitment to racing, even through severe injuries. Fellow Hall of Famers Richard Petty and Jeff Gordon shared anecdotes highlighting Rudd’s toughness and refusal to back down from challenges, even sharing an ambulance after a crash.

Carl Edwards, a hugely popular driver known for his on-track competitiveness and off-track politeness, received a much more introspective welcome. Edwards, who abruptly retired from the sport in 2016 following controversial championship losses, admitted to a lack of genuine connection with his competitors during his career, expressing regret for his past behavior. His return to the NASCAR community signifies a reconciliation and newfound appreciation for the sport and his family.

Ralph Moody, inducted posthumously, was celebrated for his remarkable career as both a driver and team owner. As co-founder of Holman-Moody Racing, Moody’s team achieved immense success, winning multiple championships and iconic races.

The evening also honored Dr. Dean Sicking with the Landmark Award for his invention of the SAFER barrier, a crucial safety innovation that has saved countless lives. Mike Harris of The Associated Press received the Squier-Hall Award for NASCAR Media Excellence.

The induction ceremony highlighted not only the thrilling competition of NASCAR but also the human stories of perseverance, regret, and reconciliation that define the sport’s rich history.
