**Imphal, India** – Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh resigned on Sunday, triggering a political crisis in the northeastern state. The resignation comes after Congress prepared to table a no-confidence motion against him. While Singh has been asked to continue as caretaker CM until an alternative arrangement is made, the possibility of President’s Rule looms large.
Singh reportedly recommended suspending the state assembly before resigning. However, with no clear successor commanding a majority in the BJP legislature, the central government may impose President’s Rule under Article 356 of the Indian Constitution. This decision is expected after Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla submits a report to the central government. The Governor has already invalidated a previous order summoning the assembly.
A BJP leader in Manipur stated that Singh’s recommendation to suspend the assembly is under consideration, and until a decision is made, he will continue as caretaker. The central government is likely to take its time before presenting any decision to Parliament. The upcoming budget session, although scheduled to end February 13th, might be adjourned early due to a holiday. If President’s Rule is implemented after Parliament’s recess, it will be addressed in the next session, beginning March 10th.
This development follows other significant news, including President Droupadi Murmu’s holy bath at the Triveni Sangam and plans for a 13km road along the Ganga in Jharkhand, modeled after Mumbai’s Marine Drive.
