**Kolkata, India –** A 22-year-old e-rickshaw driver, Soumitra Roy, has been arrested and confessed to the rape and murder of an eighth-grade student in Kolkata’s New Town area. The girl, who left home after an argument with her mother on Thursday night, was found dead in bushes Friday morning.

Police say the girl left a note before leaving her home around 10 pm. After a missing person report was filed at 4:30 am Friday, CCTV footage led investigators to Roy. He was last seen with the victim in his e-rickshaw. According to police, Roy took the girl to a secluded location, where he sexually assaulted and then strangled her.

The girl’s body was discovered by residents near Lohar Pul, showing signs of strangulation and scratch marks, leading police to believe she was raped before being killed. A post-mortem examination at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital confirmed the cause of death.

Police have stated they found no evidence suggesting any other individuals were involved in the crime. Roy’s wife revealed he has a prior criminal record, including an ongoing case for molestation in his hometown of Ranaghat. The investigation is ongoing.
