**Washington D.C.** – The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) have issued a joint warning to iPhone and Android users across the United States regarding a widespread text message scam impersonating toll agencies. The scam, believed to be perpetrated by Chinese cybercriminal groups, is rapidly spreading across the country.
Victims receive texts appearing to be from a toll authority, claiming they owe unpaid tolls and directing them to a payment link. This link leads to a fraudulent website designed to steal banking and credit card information, as well as potentially sensitive personal data like driver’s license numbers. The FTC warns that clicking these links could lead to identity theft.
The FBI advises citizens to verify any toll payment requests through official toll agency websites or customer service numbers. Any suspicious text messages should be deleted immediately. The scammers are utilizing sophisticated phishing kits, capable of impersonating toll operators in numerous states, and have previously targeted shipping companies, tax agencies, and immigration services using similar tactics. This is not the first time Chinese hackers have been linked to large-scale scams in the US; in December, a group believed to be based in China infiltrated major US telecommunication companies.
To improve online security, the FBI recommends using devices with up-to-date operating systems, strong encryption, and phishing-resistant two-factor authentication.
