Sun Feb 09 01:59:20 UTC 2025: ## Kochi’s Electric Auto Rickshaw Permit Scheme Sees Slow Uptake

**KOCHI, February 9, 2025** – Despite a recent Ernakulam Regional Transport Authority (RTA) initiative to issue 2,000 new city permits for electric autorickshaws and 1,000 for CNG/LPG/LNG vehicles, the uptake has been disappointingly low, particularly among e-rickshaw operators. The program, launched over a month ago, aimed to reduce air and noise pollution and improve passenger experience by phasing out older, polluting diesel autos.

The low response is attributed to the fact that electric autorickshaws already have the freedom to operate throughout Kerala without needing a city permit, unlike their fossil fuel counterparts. Many e-rickshaw drivers from suburban areas are reportedly hesitant to undergo the permit process as it would require them to forgo daily trips outside the city.

While there’s been relatively more interest in CNG permits due to their higher numbers, sources within the Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) point to the lack of urgency among e-rickshaw drivers as a significant factor. The final list of permit holders and vehicle numbers will be published on March 10.

The RTA’s decision to increase the total number of city permits from 3,500 to 6,500 was intended to address widespread complaints about unruly and overcharging auto drivers from outside Kochi. Officials hope the initiative will lead to greater accountability, aided by the introduction of a standardized color scheme for all permitted autorickshaws. Despite the slow start, the program remains a step toward improving transportation in Kochi.
